Roulette is one of the gambling industry’s most popular games and a major draw in many casinos. It’s a simple game in which a ball is dropped onto a spinning wheel with numbered holes. Players place bets on which hole they believe the ball will land in and are rewarded according to their betting odds. The game of roulette was derived from older gambling games such as hoca and portique. The modern version of the game emerged in 17th century France. It is believed that it combined elements of Roly Poly and Even Odds, two games involving placing bets on the outcome of a spinning wheel, and Biribi, an Italian game where players placed bets on groups of numbers.

A roulette wheel consists of a solid disk slightly convex in shape with 36 divided segments, painted alternately red and black. The segments are separated by metal frets (or separators) or a series of metal compartments, known as pockets or canoes by roulette croupiers. Thirty-six of the compartments have numbers 1 to 36 arranged in a nonconsecutive pattern and there is an extra green compartment marked 0 on American roulette wheels.

Prior to the start of the game, players make bets by placing chips on a specific section of the table. The precise placement of the chips indicates the bet type. Bets on a single number or various groupings of numbers such as odd-even, high-low and first-second-third dozens are called Inside bets while bets on the whole wheel are known as Outside bets.

The dealer then spins the wheel and a ball is dropped into one of the slots. If the bets are correct, the bettor wins and the house collects its house edge. The house edge on a particular bet can range from 2.63 percent to 7.89 percent depending on the type of wheel and the specific bet.

Although some people claim to have developed a system for beating roulette, the game is largely dependent on luck and no betting strategy can overcome this basic fact. The best way to beat the house is to avoid betting on the 0 or the double zero and instead focus on bets that offer the best odds for winning such as the split bet and the outside bets.
