The prize, which is supported by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation (HKATI) and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, aims to recognise the outstanding scientific achievements of scientists or research-related institutions set up in Hong Kong or within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is a merit-based award with a total prize fund of up to HK$5 million for five awards, each carrying a cash prize of HK$1.2 million.

The competition focuses on the following fields: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and Advanced Manufacturing, and FinTech. The maximum number of prize winners for each award field will be five persons (or teams).

This year, the HKSAR Government is particularly grateful to its supporters, including the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions and Principal Patron Swire Group, for their generous support of this award. The HK Phil is also very pleased to be able to offer more prizes this time, ranging from HK$20,000 to HK$10,000 for the champion and runner-up, respectively, as well as a full box-set of Wagner’s Ring Cycle to the winner.

In addition, the organiser will host a stimulating Fireside Chat with two HLMA past winners, Mr Owen H. KO, the winner of the 2023 HLMA Gold Award and Assistant Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Ms Ewina PUN, the winner of the 2021 HLMA Bronze Award and a doctoral candidate at Brown University. They will share their journeys and insights on the transformative power of mathematics.

The HKMA has been supporting the HLMA since its founding in 2004, with the aim of inspiring secondary school students to explore beyond boundaries and fulfil their potential in mathematics and science. In 2023, HLMA entrants from over 200 schools submitted more than 460 innovative research reports. Besides the prize money, a significant portion of the funding will be used to support HKUST with vital initiatives including academic consultation, assessment, administration, and educational outreach activities to inspire more students to participate in the prestigious competition. The Chief Executive, John Lee, said at the award ceremony that he wished to see more and more young people like the HLMA laureates who have demonstrated remarkable insight and innovation by exploring their passion and creativity in mathematics. He added that the HKMA looks forward to continuing its long-term partnership with Hang Lung Properties and the HLMA Advisory Board in fostering a scientifically inspired society. HKMA also thanked the prestigious Shaw Prize Foundation for its valuable assistance in managing the HKMA Prize. The next HKMA Prize Presentation Ceremony will be held in September 2025.
