WINNERS
Singapore is home to cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurship. It is therefore no surprise that the region has many start-ups advancing the fight against climate change. In a ceremony held in Singapore, the 2023 winners of The Earthshot Prize were celebrated for their breakthrough innovations at a star-studded awards gala.
2023 Singapore Literature Prize winners
Singapore’s most prestigious literary prizes went to a translator, a comic book author and a debut writer in the 2024 edition. The coveted Singapore Literature Prize (SLP) has long been a launching pad for new and emerging writers in the country. It is also a platform for renowned authors to showcase their writing talents and influence the next generation of readers.
This year, the SLP expanded its award categories to include a category for best English translation and another for the first Singapore graphic novel. The SLP jury also introduced a new award for the most promising young talent and named poet Cyril Wong as its 2024 winner for Beachlight, which was published by Seagull Books. The SLP’s other awards included a special commendation for Reviving Qixi: Singapore’s Forgotten Seven Sisters Festival by Lynn Wong and Lee Kok Leong, and Theatres of Memory: Industrial Heritage Of 20th Century Singapore by Loh Kah Seng, Alex Tan, Koh Keng We and Tan Teng Phee.
Founded by the National Arts Council, the Singapore Literary Awards recognise writers in four languages and aim to encourage literary excellence in the country. They are based on the Singapore Literature Prize, established in 2005, and awarded by a panel of judges that includes senior academics and professionals from the industry. The awards are presented annually and are open to both local and foreign writers of all ages.
Christopher Bathurst KC, Viscount Bledisloe
In the words of the judges, the winning work “achieves something that no other book could have done and does so with skill and assurance”. The short story cycle in this collection shows “with ruthless precision the damage women inflict on each other, on their men and on society”.
